So I've got 65 F100 3 speed manual with a newer, rebuilt 302, edlebrock carb/manifold, painless wiring and MSD ignition.
I'm driving home from the home depot yesterday and truck is running fine, I get on it to merge and it accelerates as normal but then just dies. Won't start back up. Temp gauge said I was fine at 190, oil pressure good, there is gas in it, oil level fine, coolant level fine. It will turn over but just won't start.
1st thought coil, tested that and ohms are right where MSD says they should be (blaster 2) then I test the 6v ignition using the method on MSD website and it is getting spark to the coil.
2nd I loosen the edlebrock fuel filter at the end going to the carb and sure enough gas comes squirting out.
So now I'm not sure what to check next, the truck is so simple I don't know what else it could be. The battery is fine and like I said its turning over as normal. No odd smells, no leaks, no shorted wires I can find.
The distributer is new MSD as are the plugs and wires and everything looks good.
You say your ignition and coil are all good. Are you getting spark at the spark plugs?
I have MSD 6a ignition and blaster 2 coil. I checked that the ignition was sending spark to the coil using the method on MSD's website and it was sending spark. I checked both the primary and secondary resistance on the coil using an ohm meter and it was per MSD's specs. That being said I have read that even though the coil "ohms out" right it could still be faulty. It is also mounted horizontally which is a no no. I pulled the plugs and they look good, one looks a bit rich but not bad.
I will test for spark the old fashion way by holding a plug wire near the block and turning it over when the wife gets home and can turn the key for me.
Check for bad/cracked distributor cap or rotor also.
So there was no spark to the plugs. I was sure it was the coil. Bought a new coil still no luck. Tested the ignition again and there for sure is spark coming from the coil. Must be the distributor so I took the cap off and everything looks fine but when I looked at the bottom of the rotor there is a burn mark
Thats not normal
The rest looks fine
So I can order a new rotor but I wonder what happened and if there might be something wrong with the distributor somewhere else?
MSD Tech support forum has some good info on Blaster 2 coil and "arc-through".
Your probably more savvy on MSD ignitions than I am. I still live in the points and condenser stone age.
Looks a little on the fried side doesn't it?
Funny how electricity finds the shortest path to ground.
Great pics!
Hope you found the problem.
Yeah there was a very small amount of oil that leaked out of the coil. I believe that happened because it was mounted horizontally instead of vertically as MSD says you should. I think the coil became faulty and in turn damaged the rotor. I won't know for sure until my new rotor comes in the mail and I can try it with the new coil and rotor, I'll let you know but fingers crossed this does it.
Put the new rotor on and she fired right up. Thanks Rusbkt for telling me to check the distributor and rotor. I took the cap off and looked at it before you posted that but after your post I went back and removed the rotor. If hadnt done that I wouldn't have seen the damage on the bottom and it looked fine from the top.
Lesson here; if you have a MSD canister coil make sure it is mounted vertically otherwise when it gets hot it can damage the rotor.
