Another Water Pump/Filter Question

So my water pump decided to start pissing all over the front axle the other day; only does it when the engine is up to temp, which seems weird to me because if a seal went bad, it would leak whether or not the t-stat is open, right? Anyhow, I've been reading about the need for a coolant filter and really like the idea of the IH pump, but I really need my truck back on the road now! Would it be just as effective to just replace it with a stock pump and add a DIY filter such as this later? I suppose I could keep driving it, hoping it doesn't catastrophically fail, while I wait to gather all the parts for the IH pump?

I opted to not use the IH pump because when it goes where will I be? and will there be an IH pump available? at least with the stock setup I can find a pump at any parts store and get home. I did mount a coolant filter similar to what you linked and use a napa4070 filter 4070 has no sca, I run cat antifreeze so i don't need sca.

Mine had a slow drip for the past several months. I rolled the dice and drove it without any incident while I gathered parts. Did the IH pump and so far could not be happier but we'll see after I have more than 100 miles on it. My only concern is exactly as said above. What if it dies in BFE where there is no IH pump available? I'll let you know when/if that happens. I really do love the heater hose relocation and slightly cleaner engine bay. I'm going to snap a few pics and post a comprehensive build sheet of mine in the next day or so.

Good point. The IH pump gives a nice clean look, but I don't feel like buying two and carrying a spare. I think I'll opt for building my own bypass system. I don't see why it wouldn't be just as effective.

It will work just fine for you. That's how I have mine also.

Well, you can find a Ford-style stock pump at a parts store and get home if the IH pump fails, too. If you install an IH pump, that doesn't mean you have to replace it with an IH pump if it fails. The only difference is the hoses, and if you had to replace it in a pinch like that, any store that would carry the stock pump would carry the stock hoses.

Those stores that didn't have the hose would not have had the pump, in all likelihood.

I have tons of spare parts, I don't feel I need a spare IH pump and I travel all over the US.

The thing is...the big reason these pumps fail is sand from casting irc. With a filter the interval of replacing pumps should be decreased. I just did a pump two yes ago and maybe 9k miles.I am considering swapping pumps and doing hosses all around.mine are original with 327k....

Update

So the need to have my truck fixed over the weekend drove me to just replacing the stock water pump. The leak was pretty bad, so I didn't want to chance driving it until I could gather the parts for the IH pump. In hindsight, I would have liked to go that route and just throw my stock lower radiator hose in my truck box to use if I ever needed a quick fix with a stock pump. Anyhow, the new pump is on and I want a filter to preserve its life. So yesterday I ordered the filter base and 2 filters from FleetFilter, and I just got to say, you can't beat their prices. Not on Amazon or eBay! Of course I found them through a thread on here! Thanks FTE!

Filter Base:
Wix 24019 & Napa 4019 FilterBase: FleetFilter Secure Online Store - Wix, Fram, LuberFiner, Baldwin
Non-SCA Filter:
Wix 24070 & Napa 4070 Coolant Filter: FleetFilter Secure Online Store - Wix, Fram, LuberFiner, Baldwin
