So I know there was a cosmetic change between those years... Grille, Dashboard, etc. Addition of a transmission temp gauge. Electronic climate controls on Limited models got added...
The Trailer hitch on v10 and Diesel models went up by 25% in rating due to a fastener change...
But did anything meaningful change in those years?
Did any other components get changed?
Did the electrical system get significantly more complex? (I have the 2002 Wiring Diagrams. It's two books, Original and Revised. The 2000 wiring diagram is only one book.)
Late 02 got the DVD option, adjustable pedals, and backup sensors!
Actually the backup sensors began as an option in late 2000, as i had a 2000 with the sensors.
Other changes i can think of at the moment:
cup holders were improved to a deeper, more useful version in the center console
digital climate control added in '02 on Limiteds
late '02 more threads were added to the heads on the 5.4 and 6.8 engines
If I found a low mileage 2000 and a higher mileage 2002, would there be anything that should sway my decision one way or another? (Estimating similar condition, etc.)
i've always lived by the idea of buy the lowest milage, newest, best condition car/truck you can afford. now this does not always work with excursions...
none of these minor changes would sway me from buying one over the other.
From 2000-2001 Excursions were relatively the same with only minor changes.
2000
-Late 2000 saw the introduction of the Reverse Sensing System as an optional feature
-XLT trucks were monochrome with no lower cladding
2001
-Fog lights are now a standard feature on Limited
-The reverse sensing system became standard on Limited, but was an option on XLT.
-The 7.3 got a small boost in power 250 hp and 505 lbs/ft torque
-XLT trucks now have a lower "platinum" cladding
The last model year for the Charcoal Gray interior (option on Limited and XLT)
-Monochrome Black Excursions were released as part of the "No Boundaries" package to boost lagging sales mid 2001.
2002
-Trims were expanded to include XLT, XLT premium, Limited (standard two tone paint scheme), Limited Ultimate (standard two tone paint with an option for monochrome avialable in 3 colors)
-Crystaline headlights became the standard on all trims.
-The Limited Trims got a interior upgrade with dual power seats (heated optional), automatic climate control, *on wheel controls for the radio and A/C, memory seats with two memory stores* (optional on Limited), and homelink.
-Redesigned and more comfortable front seats
-The 7.3 got another power boost to 250hp and 525 lbs/ft torque
Having both an early gen Excursion and a late gen Excursion, I have to say I prefer the comforts of the '05 Excursion over the '01. Heated seats and some of the nice simplicities Ford put in the later trucks are nice and worth it.

Across the front end, the 2013 F150 FX4 wears the bold new Super Duty style two bar grille painted gloss black flanked by HID projection headlights with the F150 logo (part of the 402A upgrade package) set in blacked out housings. The center portion of the front fascia and the entire “chin” area under the front fascia is finished in satin black with black filler areas around the low mounted fog lights. The front end of the FX4 package is finished off with a large hood decal that continues the darkened trim theme very nicely.
Also Upgrades in the Interior
As was the case with the exterior, the interior of this 2013 Ford F150 FX4 SuperCab has a heaping helping of impressive upgrades as part of either the 402A equipment group or the FX Appearance Package. When the door first opens, you cannot help but notice the gorgeous leather seats that are finished in both smooth and sueded black leather with bright red piping wrapping the front and rear seats.
