In the Morning I have to use starting fluid. when I start off, I have to be in drive 2, get up to 45 then shift to drive. when I hit a hill, it slows down and overdrive button does nothing. I have to shift it down to Drive 2 to make it up the hill. If I give it too much gas, it bogs down. Check engine light is on, but can't get a code, and wire trick doesn't blink the check engine light. Gas mileage is about 8 MPG. I paid 700.00 for it. ran great for awhile. SHOULD I JUNK IT???
It all depends on your current situation. Do you have the skills/time/money/desire to fix it? Do you have another vehicle that you can use to get around when it's gone? Basically how much are you willing to put into it to keep it running?
I'd hate to see another one of these trucks go to the junkyard, but that's how the automotive industry works.
I can only say that I'm an under dog when it comes to trying to get something running. I'll try anything. If there isn't much wrong with it mechanically and perhaps its just needs a few new parts and TLC, then I would try to resolve the problema it has now.
As said before, you van still probably sell it, get your money back, and someone else can take a stab at it. I hate seeing these go to the junkyard. I hate going to the scrap yard and see these being crushed.
Have you used the Search function here on trying to pull codes? Even Google'd the net for similar problems?
I'll third that scrapyard comment. Sad to see them go, it really is. Especially when you see them headed to the crusher with tons of perfectly good parts still attached. Especially considering that, at least in my yard, most of them ain't even been wrecked. Probably just quit running for some reason... and the owners let them go.
But on the sunny side of things, if they didn't go to the scrapyard, then mine (and a lot of other members trucks here) wouldn't be in such good shape without spending a ton more money.
OP, yeah only YOU can decide if you want to fix it. I realize that in order to do that you'll need to figure out what's wrong with it, but when you post on a forum like this you need to provide better details, such as what year and model your truck is, what engine it has, and any history that might be relevant to the problem you're having.
You could have a bad ground, blown caps in your computer, filthy battery terminals... anything like that can cause problems with engine and transmission operations.
The easiest way of avoiding the scrap yard is either fixing it if its worth it or parting it out. Or selling to somebody whos gonna do those things. Its nice to save em when ya can
OK....I am new to the whole "Forum Thing". It's a "92" F150 with The 5.8L. It's sad that one of the previous owners thrashed it. Some things have no Power. Like the drivers door has an extra wire added to power the windows. Anyway, the main prob is the bogging down if I give it gas to fast, and Tranny prob, Can't start off in Drive, to week.. Someone said it could be "Torque converter Power Lock" Or something like that.. Don't remember exact words... Randy.....
Does it bog down in neutral when you give it gas or just when in gear? Fixing someone elses hack job can be a pain. Depends on how far hacked it is as to whether its worth fixing. On the one hand $700 is pretty cheap for a running truck. You have to figure the previous owner knew there were issues. Lets say the tranny is bad. what,2k or so and your back in business. Look at the truck as a whole. If its not rusty Spending some cash up front could get you many years of dependability. Take it to a good mechanic and get his opinion.

Only if it has Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Nissan, or (that favorite pickup of terrorists) Toyota lettering on it..............all others are definite keepers
92 f150 5.8L.... Ok, So I get the highway, Drive 2, 50mph, shift to Drive. I get up to the Cruz'n Speed, then suddenly the check engine "Light" goes off, Full Power comes back, (it lunged forward), for 2 whole Seconds....Got to be a bad connection, I've Been looking...I did find a burned connection. Behind the lower panel, to the right of the steering wheel, There's a black box that has 2 wire connectors, 6 wires in each. the box "used to have" a sticker on the side of it. So I don't Know what it is, or does, or controls.. It did have burned ground connections....Randy

Awesome! I'm glad to hear you got it fixed and didn't scrap it! I've been searching for a decent F150 in the Indianapolis area for a little while and so many of the affordable ones have been let go to the point where they truly are junk and unsafe. I've had one truly scary test drive!! Keep her going strong as long as possible and feasible!
