Tire Recommendations

I am looking for a 37" that is good in the snow. From what I can tell the M/T tires are not all that great. Is that true? I want something I can run all year round and be able to tow with.

Thanks

Also what are you guys running 37" tires doing for a spare tire? I assume one won't fit where the stock spare is.

35" is about all you can get in the spare carrier and that is iffy at best. I am currently running Nitto Terra Grapplers which performed great in all the snow we had last winter and do a pretty decent job off the asphalt. A mud tire will not perform as well in snow as a good all terrain tire. Everything has its trade-offs. Mud tires look good and usually do great in muddy conditions but you sacrifice some snow performance, tire life and put up with more noise with them. An AT behaves well on the street, does well in the snow, average to low performance in actual mud but they are quiet and generally last longer than a MT.

Personally I think my next tire will Nitto Dura Grapplers since I just don't end up off the pavement all that much anymore. I know I will sacrifice some snow performance, but they will last longer and that is a big deal when you are buying what seem to be gold plated 20" tires!

More questions about the spare tire. My truck has the electronic locking rear axle. If I run the stock spare tire with 37" tires and I get a flat, would it be okay to put the stock size tire on in order to get the truck someplace where the flat can be repaired? Or would I have to put the stock tire on the front and make sure the rear's were matched? Just trying to decide if I need to spend the money for a full size spare. Also, I really don't want to have to carry it around in the bed of the truck if I don't have to.

I am talking emergency only, short distances.

I wouldn't run your elocker, LOCKED, with two different size tires on it. Emergency, short distance with two different tire sizes on a open rear should be ok - it could mess with the anti-lock braking system and transmission shifting though.

I'm in southeast michigan. I'm on my second set of toyo m/t's they handle fine in winter in my opinion..much better than the stock tires but just about anything is better than the stock tires they put on these trucks. they do make a slight humming noise on the highway just FYI vs. stock that are silent but i don't mind it a bit. my father n law got some toyo a/t's because someone on the F150 side of this forum told him they were better in the longevity department but frankly they pick up every pebble he drives over and throws it at the side of his truck. but that could be just the area we live

Yeah, I removed the spare tire and the winch down there since it wasn't really doing much anyway.
