I have a 71 f100 4x4 and it currently has 3.50:1 gear ratio . My first question is what is a good gear ratio for towing up hills steep hills and trail use?? This thing is a slug with 3.50's when it comes to pulling hills. It does well at speeds of 65 to 70 on flat ground. I have 33 inch mud tires. It has a np435 transmission. I am putting a 460 in it. My second question is does ford make an AOD for the 460 and if so what T-case mates to it? I want the overdrive because I drive it to work on the highway and do not want to redline at freeway speeds, but still need the rest for off road and hauling. I have been told to go with a 5 speed NV4500 and forget the auto. Can anyone help me with my dilemma??
Alright, What kind of engine do you have now??? I have a 351 andnp435,np205 with 3.56 gears and it pulls mountains under heavy load in fourth gear, secondly If your going to put the 460 in it your going to have to find different gears anyway because of the range in powerband.
I would suggest, for whatever engine application, going to 3.73s since your 3.50 suck on the mountains.
And why not get a gear splitter instead of messing with the o/d setup?? you will get the best of both worlds my friend!!!
Hardball...I am currently running a 360 c.i. engine np435/dana 21 . I have decided to just run my truck as an off road truck. I have another vehicle for a daily driver. I am still going to put an auto in because I hate shifting. What gear ratio would be best with a c-6 and 33' mud tires so I can pull my trailer up hills without doing speeds just faster than a snail and good for offraod trail use?
Hardball ....Recently I pulled my 16' camp trailer up a grade and I have to take that hill in 2nd and third gear. Some places I was doing 20 mph. It had no power I had my foot in it most of the way and could not get any faster than 35 mph. Then the engine overheated and the transmission got extemely hot and began to leak. I did a test and climbed the same grade with just the truck and could only do 55mph with my foot in it.What could cause this problem???? Could it be my clutch is slipping and needs adjustment, or maybe my engine is just wiped out or possibly the gear ratio?? I have been told that the gear ratio is fine.
