I am stuck sitting in Texas working the oil fields right now, but am plotting my next build. 68-70 body with a 70s Supercab extension grafted on, sitting on a late 80s/early 90s frame with an IDI and ZF.
I'm having a really hard time finding the frame donor though, so next week I am going to look at a 95 with everything I want except it's a PSD. I want the IDI because they are much cheaper to fix, and can be tuned to similar power levels without too much trouble. I also have one in the van, so having two vehicles with the same engine reduces the spare parts I have to have hanging around.
How hard is it to go from an early PSD to an IDI? I know the PSD has tons of wiring, but aside from that is everything pretty much bolt in?
Thats what it sounds like, PSD drive train will drop right in, you just have a bunch of wiring to install. Dont forget the gas pedal due to the drive by wire setup those things use.
Oh, I know. I really wanted to avoid reworking the firewall for pipe clearance too but if I go this route I'll pretty much have to.
I forgot about the pedal, I may have to do something like International did with some of their trucks and run a cable to a box to operate the position sensor.
As far as wiring, since it's a manual there should be much less but I'm thinking of modifying as needed to put the computer on the right fenderwell or maybe up behind the glovebox but I want to make it easily removable for the IDI swap.
Are the engine perches the same?
