Hope everyone doesn't mind my endless questions but I'm trying to learn about this 6.0.
1. How long is considered a long crank when cold? 3,secs or 5 secs. I've just had a HPOP replacement and this morning I cranked it abut 4 secs, turned off the key and hit it again and after 4 secs it started.
2. Scanguage was giving fairly accurate mpg before last trip to shop. Today it read. 4.3 mpg towing into the wind, however, pencil and paper method said 6.76 mpg. Something out of kilter.
3. Undid degas cap to check the fluid. Everything looked fine and the fluid level was right on. I looked at the threads of the cap and they had a white residue on them. What could this be?
That crank time after a hpop replacement is remarkable. 3-5 seconds is nothing to be concerned with. If you are cranking for over 30 seconds, you have an issue. It normally takes some time to purge air out of the system.
The white residue on your degas cap is just a crystallization of coolant after it dries. DEF does the same thing.
Not sure about your mpg, but with numbers that low, do you idle alot?
My crank times cold will be longer the less patient I am. My process now is to turn the key on, but don't go to start when the glow plug light goes out. At least wait til your injectors stop buzzing and if you count to 30 from the time your glow plug light goes out -- well mine fires right up. Batteries should always be charged and you should know the health of them, especially if you have a stock 110A Alternator...
Try my method and count the actual crank seconds...
