From what reading I have done, later model e40d did not have a transmission gear, they used a sensor off the rearend and that might explain why you didn't find anything.
I just got a call from my transmssion guy and the trans has a Green 6 tooth gear in it that has a slight bow in the gear teeth. This may be just enough to prevent the speedo cable gear from engaging. There is also some play on the cable assembly that may allow it to walk off the gear...just a hunch. I also talked to the Ford dealer and they say the orignal Green drive gear, was replaced with a natural colored gear. I have to wonder what changes that made Ford discontinue the original Green one.
I asked my transmission guy to take some pictures so I will forward once I have them.
Despite giving the Ford dealer my VIN number they gave us the speedo drive gear part number for a 4WD and I have 2WD. Lucky my transmission guy knew what they were doing. Stay tuned...
The number in the write up above is CASZ-17271-B is a Black one with 20 teeth.
How many teeth did your old one have as that is what you need to match and what color was it?
The CASZ-17271-B is a Black one with 20 teeth and will work with a 5.13:1 rear end with 16 inch tires.
But I think the number should be C1DZ-17271-A 4.10 Gear Ratio Black 20 Speedo Gear.
Got the assembly back today and my transmission guy said the original drive gear was really loose compared to the fit of the new. Thanks again for all the help and good call, SubFord, on the drive gear E8TZ2N598A. When I get pics from him I'll email them to you.
Sorry but my trans guy told me they where going to take pictures but they never got around to it during the process. I do have the speedo gear pt. number and I'll post it here shortly.
I am not sure how long i have to wait to get permission to post some pics but I'll be sure too once I have access.
