i finally figured out how to transfer data from the security DVR to a flash drive so i can print still shots or save it with a lot of help from my 13 year old neighbors son.
but now i can not figure out how to convert from a 264 file to something my computers can recognize.
i tried downloading win-zip like the computer suggested, but still am lost and can not open it. no matter what i do i get a can not recognize format notice.
anyone have any ideas to get me working? and i would appreciate it if you put it in terms a 10 year old can understand, i am not all that smart when it comes to computers.

Tom most DVR's give you an option to save the file as an AVI type..
My suggestion would be to try saving it again and look to see if there is an different option...
this one will not work because i want to save the image to my computer to view. it will only convert it to a file that can be viewed by a dvd blueray or cd player

and this one will not work because the file is over 800 mb,for the 2 cameras files. it would cost me $50 to do this here.
That seems very large file size..
My H264 files are usually 5 Mb per file for one camera.. Mine breaks down the file to smaller segments
What DVR do you have??
If you give me the make and model I will look it up and see what options you have...
it is a MLT 9104.
unfortunately when i bought this system i did not know enough to buy a better setup.
i have since upgraded to speco HT671H dome cameras.
i just found something called AVI generator on the install mini cd. so i am tryin g to run the file off the flash drive. i will let you know if it works or not. i am sure there is probably a way to cut the file down in size, but so far the only way i can see to save info is to backup 1 hour and the equates to 345 mb per hour.
I found this owners manual.. Not sure it's the exact one you have, but it looks like on page 25 that you can specify the start time and end times that you want to back up..
If you choose a small time frame the overall file size will be smaller.. Then you can create multiple time frame files to backup what you need..
It also says there is a player to playback the files it creates..
Check it out and let me know if that is your DVR manual
success!!! that AVI generator converted it to a file windows media player will recognize.
now all i have to do is see if i can clean the images up to get facial recognition.

That's good...
The older DVR's were difficult to get the images backed up

nope, different system. but at least i now know how to convert it. next step is to try to clean up the video. the new cameras are 1100000 times better than the old ones, i can clearly do facial recognition at 2 am.
the old ones gave a fuzzy image.
unfortunately, the thief pics are on the old cameras.

Well we tried...LOL
Yeah it doesn't pay to buy cheap cameras... Plus it's better to have more cameras for different angles of the same area..
Dam thieve's never smile pretty for the camera...LOL
i bought a real DVR that has 8 inputs for future expansion, a 1T hard drive, and built in AVI converter.
it is also remote access ready. all i had to do was type in the IP of the DVR and the web client pops up. type in user name and password, and i can live view or search the Hard drive.
