Change transmission & rear end oil

I have a 1988 Super Duty, w/ 4 speed manual transmission, I want to change the transmission & rear end gear oil. I have been asked why in the past, mostly choice, as the vehicle was not serviced or maintained by the original owner, before I bought it, and i don't know what kind of abuse it has had.
How many quarts does the Transmission hold, how many quarts in the rear end?
Also if anyone has a good method to change the gear oil I would appreciate it. Draining is no mystery.

thank you.

I changed both on my 94 f150 automatic. The transmission was kind of a pain since I had to unbolt the entire pan, make sure you have a large oil catch if thats what you have to do. For the rear end gear oil I took off the whole cover since I wanted to check something out in there anyway, so thats how I drained it but filling it back up was tough, if I remember correctly it took me about 3 quarts in the rear end, but I have a 1/2 ton pick up not a super duty so I'd investigate that if I were you. And those were the reasons I changed mine mostly, not because I didn't know the previous owners service records, I just wanted to change them and now am glad I did. Good luck!

On your rear end you need to fund out if it is an lsd rear end or not before you by your rear gear oil. If it has the lsd make sure you either get lsd gear oil or an additive and mix it in correctly so it does not ruin it.
