T-case problems

T-case problems
So I just got news from the mechanic my transfer case will either need to be replaced or re built. I have a few questions . What transfer case do I have on my truck (2000 ford f350 v10 6.8 4x4 automatic). Also is this a job I can tackle on my own if I goto a pull it your self yard or get one off craigslist. And if anyone could direct me to good thread or write up on a how to do it yourself. . Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

NV271 or NV273 - one is shift-on-the-fly, the other manual, not sure which is which.
The best bet is the Ford factory service manual for how to replace it.
It's not a huge big deal. The trouble would be jacking it up into place.
I wouldn't be afraid to tackle it myself, it can't be harder than getting an NP435 4-speed tranny into place with only a single floor jack

What I would do is grab a used one, slap it in, and take apart the old one and figure out what happened. That way you have the luxury of rebuilding it at your leisure.
But that's just me.
