I am new to this column, and I posted a quetion a few weeks ago. Thanks for the replys. I have a 1978 F150. Is there anything that the hwy dept. can go by to identify these trucks? My door has been changed, and the metal tag from the firewall is gone.
Thanks, Ricky.
There is a VIN stamped into the frame rail on the passenger side near the front of the truck. It could be either on the outside or inside of the rail. I would attach a bronze brush to a drill and scrape off the rust and dirt buildup from over the years. If you still can't see it try a piece of paper and some charcoal or graphite. That should bring it out.
they also put an id plate with the vin number on a plate and riveted it to the front of the passenger side bed. from under the truck look at the bed by the cab, mine was located on the pass. side between the cab and the bed.
Thanks for the replys. My truck has no bed on it to look for a plate rivited to it. It has a flatbed on it. I didn't think that the plate should be on the door jam. But no, it isn't there. I will have to look on the frame.
Thanks to all.
I have a 76 F-250 4X4 and I found my VIN about six inches back of the passenger side front shock on top of the frame rail. It took a wire brush to make it visible again, as mentioned by mattsbox99.

I have the same problem with finding an accurate VIN number because my cab and doors were changed. I haven't as yet found the number on the frame but I do have the tag on the box (if it's the original box). The problem is the numbers on the tag don't seem to be the same as what I'd expect a VIN to be. Is there a different decoder or listing to describe what these numbers mean? This is what my tag says.
