The ring gear looks fine to me. How does the carrier look inside? Any large chunks of metal in the housing? What condition are the axle shaft splines in?

No metal in housing and axle shafts splins are good. Honestly it looks pretty good. Idk what could have been grinding.

Before You pulled the 3rd member did you check to see if the stub shaft was spinning in the slip yoke? Might just be stripped. Happened to me in my 79 years ago under similar circumstances.

The pinion gear is the one thats goes through the housing and connects to the drive shaft, the ring gear is the round one that the pinion turns.
What do the splines look like on the axles? The thing is if something is wrong in there you should be able to see it!
