I currently own a 2002 EB expedition. I have installed a Gibson exhaust and a K & N intake. My problem is when ever I run the a/c the truck will become very sluggish until I am driving for a few minutes. I previously owned a 2000 EB and it did the same thing. I have taken it to ford numerous times and they cannot find anything wrong. I have even taken them for a ride when it is happening!!!!

Did you reset the ECM after installing your mods ? Most vehicles run sluggish with the A/C on, the compressor sucks up like 20 or so HP when running....
Please remind me how to reset the ECM. Do I disconnect the battery for 20 or 30 minutes?
This only happens during the summer time. The temp here is around 100 all summer. It will especially happen in stop and go traffic and at idling for long periods of time.
Basiclly you can floor the throtle from a dead stop and it is like you are driving a ford festiva. There is a lot of fan noise also like the engine is working really hard but you are not moving to quickly. After driving for a little bit and then starting from a dead stop it is fine.
I think it's just the nature of these beasts to run very poorly in hot and humid weather. I certainly notice a significant difference in performance between other seasons and the summers in Houston.
To reset your PCM, disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and turn on headlight switch.
I really do not think that very poorly are the words to describe this situation. It runs like S$#T. I would rather not run the A/C but it is to hot for that. I had heard that you can put a fan on the tranny cooler and that might help. Has anyone heard of this?
Well, the only difference that the A/C would make on the motor is the compressor. Your ECM should adjust your idle speed to compensate, usually +200 RPM. You can hear the engine throttle up as soon as you turn the A/C on. The clutch then engages on the compressor. Here is a thought : Your A/C compressor will run if you put the front defroster on, evem with the temp. control turned to its hottest setting. The reason for that is the A/C system dries the air, so you can blow hot, dry air on the windshield, clearing it. My point is that if your problem is related to the A/C compressor, it should show up either with the A/C or defroster on, since both trigger the compressor to kick on. Try your defroster, and monitor the engines' response as the compressor kicks on/off. Maybe your compressor is shot, and it is putting too much of a load on your motor. Or, the hot weather is affecting your cooling system, like a clogged radiator, bad thermostat, etc. A thermostat is an easy, inexpensive fix, and maybe you need a flush/fill cooling overhaul. Just a few suggestions.........
Is the K&N filter the one that is open to underhood heat. When the AC is on and the compressor is running there is a tremendous amount of heat exchanged through the condensor. If if this air is being used for combustion it will have very poor performance.
You definitely have something wrong. My Expy has always pulled the same whether in cold or hot air, even at 124 degrees in Mojave desert.
Suggestions: The self correcting symptoms you describe sound like drag from bearings failing. Check temperture by feel, on idler, ac, fan, alternator or other pulleys run by your serpentine belt then loosen belt and test for easy spinning on any that appear to be unsually warm.
Check color and odor of tranny fluid after it starts this. Sometimes dirt can clog valves temporarily and cause erratic shifting.
High temps especially in stop and go traffic can cause some brake dragging if caliper slides are not lubricated well.
Make sure emergency brake is actually releasing from rear, sometimes return springs break and the drag is pronounced until they heat up and slip.
Hey PnutELpaso, i had a 98 EB 5.4 with the Airaid intake, and throttle body spacer, diablochip bank1, and an extreme flow muffler dropped right before the rear axle (ran like a champ), i exchanged the intake and spacer on to the new 2001 E.B. 5.4 i bought with low miles and its doing the same thing, its sluggish, i live in Fresno CA. and its about 102-105 everyday, i think its because of the intake, its sucking hot air (in the morning its about 72-76 and its chirps the back tires so heat is the killer. My solution is to purchase the Volant intake take the throttler body spacer off and put a 75mm T.B. Hope this helps.
Th Diablochip helped the tranny shift firmer. But the thing is that i dodnt understand is that why would my 2001 Expy run crappy when hot, and the 98 Exoy i traded in ran good hot or cold (of course it ran better when cold but it didnt have such a dramatic power loss. I should be getting the Volant any day now. I will keep informed.
Ok i installed the Volant intake, it made a world of a difference, it runs like a champ all day and even better at night. It was the Airaid intake that was killing the flow. Even though the Volant runs about $304 plus tax, i think its a better intake, it sucks colder air than the open type filters. Next ther 75mm T.B. and the twin Spintech mufflers dropped right before the axle, the gibson headers, the Superchip microtuner and a Granatelli Mass Airflow Sensor. I think that should be enough for the big beast. Its not like im going to drag race it, but then again it wouldnt hurt to see what i would be running. Probably an mid 7 to 8 sec 0-60 and a mid 15 1/4 mile. Not to bad for a 4x4 E.B. weighing about 5,650 pounds alone.
Well i bought mine from a local performance shop, you cant buy directly from the Vendor (sucks) but im pretty sure you'll find someone that sells them, as for gas mileage i havent gone anywhere far to calculate the difference, i currently for the moment just do city driving and the 1/8 mile dirt road drive to my house. Keep us posted on what you do and how it works out.
