do throttle body spacers do any good? is running underpulleys a reasonable idea. I want a comfortable vehicle and probably would not do the a/c but would this be harmful to my waterpump, steering, alternator, etc...
I won't attempt to answer your throttle body ? as I have little experince with this kind of thing. As for underdrive pulleys I may be blowing smoke here, but, think about this. Yourwaterpump, alternator, and power steering were all designed to run at a certain range of RPM's. If you shrink the pulleys I would think you would increase the RPM's which in turn could wear out these items faster. At least that's what I think that is if I understand the basics of pulleys. Am I right guys?
I would have to agree about the pulleys. As far as throttle body spacers, I've heard people say here that they aren't worth the money. However, I have no real experience in either department. A complete performance throttle body from bbk only adds about 7hp to a stock truck. Its still a nice upgrade but not a mind boggling difference. That would lead one to believe that a throttle body spacer would produce even less performance.
TB spacers are for BIG engines running at ULTRA-hi RPMs. On a truck engine, it's dead weight & wasted money. Same for underdrive pulleys. They put more load on the bearings (from the added tension) and don't do anything but hurt driveability and parts availability. What happens when you're travelling and your alternator goes out? You gonna carry an impact wrench to swap the little pulley onto the replacement alt? You can't run a normal alt because the belt won't fit. The stock parts are the BEST for all-around driveability, durability, and performance.
You've got the pulley thing backwards. Underdrive pulleys slow the accessories down (smaller drive pulley, larger driven pullies.)
They do add some real power, usually up to about 5 HP, throughout the entire power band of the engine. This does not come without a problem. They reduce the output of those accessories. If your cooling is at all marginal or you've stuck in a mongo sound system, then underdrives may not be for you. If you tow a heavy trailer then maybe you should pass? I don't have a set in my truck, they don't make them for the 300 but I have a set on my 300 RWHP Mustang and have never had a problem, so I tend to dismiss this argument somewhat.
If you've stuck a big gear in your truck or tend to rev the pee out of it or both, then underdrive pullies will return the accessories to their intended speed,
T/B spacers only make your truck faster by lightening your wallet. Save your money.
