Cooling Fan Questions

Alright here goes.....I bought a used 2006 F250 in February of this year. It has 152,000 miles. I bought the truck to pull my 21 foot Carolina Skiff. The truck has been running great when I am not towing. I have never owned a diesel and really no nothing about how they operate. Well, one day I was towing my boat down the interstate and I thought the truck was about to blow up! Now I know that the cooling fan came on. I took the truck to a mechanic and he said he didn't think the clutch was hung up, but it was doing what is was suppose to. It never does it when I am not pulling the boat. I took my boat to the beach on vacation and on the way back the fan ran for about an hour and a half. Is this normal? The dummy gauges said everything was fine, but I know how that goes. Are there ways to check everything out within pulling the boat? No check engine and no pending codes. Thanks and excuse my ignorance.

You should first buy and program a Scan Gauge II or phone app to monitor your engine parameters..... look up in the tech folder for all the codes. Anyone who helps you here will need to know some things that you cannot get with the stock gauges.

The only time I hear my fan is when towing. But, as Bud stated, need to get some readings done to see if there is a root cause for the fan running for an hour and a half.

Read through the tech folder. There is a lot of info there about your truck.

A few cups of coffee in the morning, and some good reading material.

If you want a "boat load" of info, send me an email, and I'll pass along the spread sheets Bismic has put together. ( amdriven2liv@yahoo.com )

Also when that fan does come on it sounds like a 747
starting it's takeoff roll.

If you are still worried let me know and I will make a video
with the fan commanded to 100%.

Yes...it sounds like a 747 about to take off! It really drains the power and the A/C does not blow as cool. Thanks.

Wow....that is strange. I can definitely tell when mine turns on. I actually recorded the sound and let my mechanic listen to it. He said it was the fan. Would the fan correlate to the throttle? If it is at idle you do not hear it, but when you mash the pedal it starts the roaring process and continues. I have pulled the boat the same distance in the mornings when it is fairly cool and it does not do it, but heading back in heat of day it does.

Think its just me. When warmed up say after driving then stop the fan ramps up then when I take of accelerating to say 45 it really jumps up the cuts off past 45 but I've never really heard to 747 thing. About all I can hear in the cab is injectors and turbo. I just went through this week before last since my temps were higher due to high oat. Only way I could check the fan was the scangauge FSS pid.

EDIT: I posted this prior to reading other replies....I think you might have a problem.

It sounds like it "could" be normal, but the only way to be sure is to get something like a Scangauge, or Torque Pro app to see actual temps. You will also be able to see what temp the fan kicks up in speed. (You can view fan speed on the devices as well)

With a 21' boat, I assume you have tandem axles with trailer brakes....check to make sure each wheel spins freely. Get a 4x4 block of wood, (or something similiar) drive one tire on it...it will raise the other tire next to it....spin it to see if has any resistance.

I had some sticking calipers, causing extra drag....which makes the truck motor work harder, which can cause the fan to run more.

The A/C not cooling as well when you hear the fan running is due to the engine is probably running hot. The a/c condensor is (in laymens terms) a radiator for the a/c system. It cools the freon. It is located in front where your radiator, intercooler, trans cooler, etc.

My earlier post stating is was normal, was before I read about the a/c and the fan being in 747 mode for 1 1/2 hours...THAT is not normal.

If it were my truck....I would park it until I got a Scangauge or something similiar.

I did not take into account the 1 1/2 hour of it doing that.

Some thing to read the live data is needed.

Also the sound that the fan makes will depend on the %
that it's commanded ON and RPM.

The higher the % and the higher the RPM = more noise
One thing if you getting the sound all the time and the deltas are OK
then you start looking at chaffed wires or a failed fan clutch.

The times I have heard mine roar was less than a minute and back down.
I was climbing a long hill very slow and very little air flow. Temps were going up
Fan kicked on and cooled things down.
