Headlights blink out.

Truck has done this a couple times now, after a little while of driving with the headlights on they start to flash out like a short. But I can shut them off and wait a minute then they're fine again for awhile.

This is a classic sign of a bad headlight switch, right?

usually it's the sign of an old headlight switch or crappy wiring. Time to remove the load from the switch and use relays to power the headlights directly from the battery.

LMC's harness is about $30. Fab your own for about $20. Your call.

Perfect! Thank you HIO, that info helps me a lot. Looks like I'll be putting in some nice relays.

Dimmer switch could also be bad as it sits on the floor and collects moisture and mud.

A well known wiring issue from the 60s & 70s, add the relays from whiter brighter, inexpensive and great cure.

Good idea to clean the area around the dimmer also.

Has anyone bought the LMC headlight harness? Is it quality enough to justify buying it? Or can a better one be built?

Dimmer switch works fine, but the high beams will blink out too.

it is fairly easy to wire your own. I just changes the appearance, but if you take your time you can get a nice clean install without the harness.

You might still need a new switch, now that the damage is becoming apparent. Replacing the relays might prolong the life of the current switch, but it may already be too far gone. Be ready for that expense just in case. Also, if you haven't already, the 3g alternator swap is a wonderful thing.

Yeah I have a HO 3G. Good power it puts out. Even though I don't need it all it's nice to have.

It makes using the larger pull items like the cigar lighter air pumps and such work up to their full potential. I also love the fact that my none of my lights dim at stops lights anymore. I might eventually add some things to use some of the extra power but that is a bit down the line for me.

My head light switch finally gave up after of heavy use lighting all the camper over head lights. Then one night started doing like yours.

Had troubles before with the dimmer switch fixed that.
Then yrs later head light switch went out.

Found a replacement nos Motorcraft on ebay $20 bucks about 6 yrs ago..

I'm trying to keep mine as stock as possibly, For the next owner.

Plus easier finding replacement parts when you know what your dealing with.

Yep... works fine. Plug and play. It comes with the correct headlight plugs so ya don't have to scrounge around to reuse old ones or resort to blade terminals. For the money and time saving I say it's a wash.

And converse to the pic in their catalog with yellow sheathing, mine came with a black wrap.

Good deal, I just went down to oreillys and tried to piece together all the pieces I'd need to build my own. It came out to $35. So I think I'll just buy it from LMC.

Is the LMC harness made of 14 gauge wire? Or just 16?

What about a relay for the running lights? Or do they not pull enough power to matter? Even with an extra 10 trailer lights?

Ok, time has come and gone.

I tried the LMC harness, what a total POS that thing is....
I replaced the headlight switch. That solved the problem for a few months. But now it's back.

I bought some relays to use, but I'm trying to figure out exactly how I want to do it. I'm not a fan of the way explained above. Too complicated.

I've got an idea of my own that I think will work very well, and is simpler. I'll keep you all posted.

Headlights blink out.

Oops, forgot to update this....

Anyway, I got them rigged up and working well.

I have a 30 amp circuit breaker mounted next to the starter solenoid for my trailer brakes. I have a short piece of 10ga wire bringing power to it. I got power for the relays off the hot side of that, 1 14ga wire split to both relays (since they arnt on at the same time)

I used the original passenger side wires for the triggers, (obviously)

Then ran new 16ga red and green wires to each headlight, with the driver side routed over the top of the core support in a black sheath to hide it some.
