Have you considered installing a cheap vacuum gauge? It will help you remember to drive with a light foot (when the vacuum is highest) instead of pedal to the metal (lowest vacuum reading). I had one on an 84 Ranger and it helped train me to drive more economically.
As I can recall from my 89 2.9 5spd 2wd Ranger, it got about 25-26 mpg on the highway, just by driving conservatively.
Remember to remove the junk out of the bed too..........Less weight, more MPG.
