I have an 05 Expedition 5.3 2wd. It seems to be missing when driving but idles fine. I'm not getting any warning lights either. Haven't had a chance to plug in a reader yet but wanted to see if any of you have had this issue. This is my wife's daily driver and she describes it as jumping and hesitating when she gets on the gas. Any help would be great.
Best to check for codes first, or if your scanner supports live data, hook it up and go for a drive. The live data should give you a misfire count for each cylinder, if any.
Assuming I cant get live data, what is the best way to check for a bad coil?
Swapping them one at time with a known good one, then going for a drive to see if it drives any different. Obviously if there are 2 or more misfiring, it get more difficult to feel if it's driving better because it won't drive perfect unless all the misfires are gone.
If it seems to idle fine, but misses on heavy accelerating, I doesn't sound like a COP misfire but rather a fuel supply issue.
How many miles on it? Last fuel filter change?
Ever change the fuel pump?
If not, maybe test the fuel pressure at the rails first?
Had a 1997 Expedition 4x4 at 106k miles, idled fine but sputtered a little under power. Changed all spark plugs, good to go.
Just goes to show, there could be numerous solutions.
I his case, it sounded like she was really getting on the throttle. With your's, just "under little power" might be the difference to point a certain direction or another.
I've had fuel pumps start to go bad but could only tell when under full power when the system needed max fuel pressure.
