I am supposed to pick up a 1997 Ranger from a used car dealer this week. However, I have a concern. When I took it out for a drive the steering wheel began to shake around 50MPH. The salesman told me that the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced and the problem would be fixed. So anyway, I called him yesterday and he told me the oxygen sensor has been replaced and the problem is fixed. Is he pulling my chain here or what? How could a faulty oxygen sensor possible make the steering whell shake? In any case, before I sign off on the truck I am going to drive it again to make sure the problem is fixed. I don't really know what the dealer is going to do to the car,...but I guess I can assume that if the steering wheel does NOT shake, then the problem is fixed? Note the truck has brand new tires. I would really appreciate some help in this manner.
No way can a bad O2 sensor cause the steering wheel to shake. He probably just rotated the tires front to back to get the out-of-balance one away from the steering wheel.
you can also look for flat spots in the tires, this was the case for me. If you have older tires or even cheap ones, since the front is not ABS if the tires lock up, they might have flat spots. Also you should consider out of balance. If the salesman rotated the tires, you will still have the same problem (out of balance) the only difference will be the steering wheel doesn't vibrate...watch out..make sure you give it a good look!
don't trust dealers, they screwed me on my truck, get under the front end and give everything a good shake and make sure nothing's loose. see if you can get a new set of tires out of the deal, if they want to sell it bad enough...
I appreciate everyones response and help. Just an update.... I went back to the dealer to pick up the truck this weekend. When I got there he told me he took care of everything and the truck runs great (e.g. no shakes). However, when I took it out for a drive the same problem had still persisted. The dealer then began to argue that there was nothing wrong!!! Is this guy that desperate for a commission??? As it turns out, all they did was rotate the tires. I'm still with out a truck, but atleast I did't buy a problem. Thanks everyone!!!
