hey guys been fight this problem ever since i bought my truck its a 95 f150 xlt 5.0. what happens is that when i let it sit for a long period of times sometimes i get a long crank start up times, but other times it fires right up. i tried priming the fuel pump to see if that would help but does not help, and every time i get a long crank time i get a strong smell of fuel like its flooding itself. here is a list of parts i have changed out:
fuel filter
fuel pressure regulator
IAC
ambient temp sensor
throttle position sensor
cleaned TB
checked for vacuum leaks
MAF (on its way to me)
spark plugs
spark plug wire
cap and rotor
ignition coil
im thinking about getting a ICM but not for sure what you guys think.
What are your fuel pressures? If good then run some Sea Foam in the gas. Use a full can per tank.
I read a lot about injectors but in all my years & bunches of miles I have never had to replace an injector. I believe running cleaners in my gas regularly though. I use Lucas & SeaFoam.
going to revive this thread still having this problem. only thing i have not replaced is the fuel injectors. other than that i don't know what to change out. i am almost to the point where i just have to start throwing parts at it until it fixes the problem.
edit: or it might be the check valves in the fuel pumps maybe?
I would say you have a leaking fuel injector and the engine is flooded when you first try to start it. If you hold the throttle to the floor when you try to start it the first time it should speed up the starting time. After it starts up then shut it off and then restart it with your foot off the throttle so the computer can get the closed throttle reading from the TPS.
alright well im about to buy some reman fuel injectors from GB remanufacturing. comes with a 12 month warranty. what you guys think about reman fuel injectors and how hard is it to change out all the injectors?
anybody? really need some help on new or reman fuel injectors. and plus i just hoping its the fuel injectors. holding down the gas pedal does help it start. and if i just let it try to start on its on without foot on gas pedal i get a strong odor of fuel after it starts.
hate to revive a old thread but im still having this long crank time issue and i have not replaced the fuel injectors because i don't think they are the problem because it does not do the long crank time all the time. if it is leaky fuel injectors would it long crank every time the truck sits for awhile?
At the top of this forum there is a "sticky" that is essentially a tutorial for rebuilding your fuel injectors.
This is a good way to get in to the injectors for service, as you may have a broken o-ring on an injector causing a vacuum leak resulting in the system going rich.
You haven't mentioned your oxygen sensor, they have a lifespan and should go if older.
Your catalytic converter could now be compromised due to this long-lasting condition. If it's plugged your restricting your air in at start-up.
There are a lot of threads in the search forum about hard-to-start, under the headings "cold" and "warm" for example, check these out at length and start to eliminate each possibility.
On these digital trucks everything has to be right, and you may end up addressing a lot, so get on board, or not.
well i have changed out the o2 sensor a long time ago when i first got the truck. i don't think my converter is clogged because its not getting warm or anything. i have not changed out the MAF yet since never got around to it.
