Anyone running this? Worth it?
My 1995 is all stock. Will this still be worth buying without changes down pipe or anything else. I'm leaving on a long trip in a few weeks and don't have time to redo my exhaust at the moment.
I would like to get better performance while towing a 78 Cherokee out to CO and back. May be doing a run to Montana also on this trip. I'll do the other mods later in the summer when things wind down.
I'm running that same chip and my truck pulls very well with it. In order to get max performance I recommend the following mods before installation: guages, exaust, and intake. At minimum you can get by with guages so you don't overheat the engine or the tranny. You will probably break the stock E40D tranny after installation so prepare for a tranny upgrade soon. I then added Stage 1 injectors and an intercooler, and OMG it pulls like a rhino. I tow my #8,000 lbs travel trailer over the Cascade mountain passes with ease. It's a fairly simple chip install. Just make sure you scrape away the protective coating from the connection point on the PCM. Otherwise the chip won't work. Also, disconnect all power during the installation process or you may fry your PCM. Good luck.

I would say it's definitely worth it, but until you get bigger injectors and a turbo, the most gain you'll see is 60 hp with it all stock. It was definitely worth it for me and it woke my truck up big time. It also helped my mileage some, but probably because it doesn't have to work as hard to get up to speed, etc...
Also, FWIW, you won't break the stock tranny unless it's already on it's way out or you romp on it. Mine has been fine.
I can live with a 60 hp gain for now. I'm just running out of time to do anything to it other than a oil,air and fuel filter change. Maybe when I get back I'll look into a new exhaust other mods.
Is coming out of the transmission pan the best place for a temp sensor? I'd like to put on a pan with a drain plug while I'm at it. Any suggestions? Isn't there a later year that has the plug and will it work on my 1995?
I'm pretty happy with it in its stock form just looking for a little better mileage and some more umph to get over Monarch Pass in CO with a loaded trailer.
I would really suggest at least doing the DP and then opening the exhaust (CAT and Muffler delete). It is cheap and will greatly improve your HP and mileage. If it were me, I would do this before adding a TS Chip
I agree with bbslider. Do the cat and muffler delete and also open up your air intake and take off the stock air filter. Install a larger one like the 6637 from napa. Its cheap and easy and helps greatly. Also another tip is get a blue spring upgrade.
Hey Leatherneck, what is a "blue spring upgrade?" Also Semper Fi Devil Dog!
Its a stronger spring that you can get to replace the OEM one in your Fuel pressure Regulator setup. it increases your PSI. Or you can take out your OEm one and stretch it out a bit like I did. then make sure you test the PSI. It should be between 40-80. I have mine at 60. Heres a kit i found for example:
Is Banks worth the extra money? I was thinking of running a Turbo back system.
I like that Diamond Eye 2 piece down pipe idea. Looks like that might eliminate the refabbing of the fire wall.
Is there any I should steer clear of ?
How much of a gain is the air filter deal? I have about 8 more stock filters here at home. Is there anything I can do to the stock set up for more flow.
After some serious thought I figure if I do the exhaust and tuner a big portion of that money spent will be saved in fuel. I'm looking at 3500 miles minimum with a good possibility of 5500. Maybe more if work pisses me off before I leave.
Best trip ever was 10500 journey in my Dodge van back in 1993 Did it in the winter. Thanksgiving spent in a blizzard in Casper,WY and Christmas on the beach in Daytona, Florida.
This weekend is dedicated to the truck. 3 days of living under , in and on this thing. Next weekend can be spent doing the exhaust work. Then it's blast off time to the Rocky Mountains.
I measured my pipes today and they are 3 1/2" . Is that stock or did someone upgrade to that size? It still has the stock down pipe. I do believe that is going away next weekend. Just need to decide what brand to run.
If I need to swap up to a 4inch system I will just slightly confused on what I should do.
I never gave much thought to upgrading this truck until a couple of weeks ago. I was always afraid of breaking the next weakest link by going bigger on stuff, so I just left it as I got it which is I believe all stock. I watched a guy at work beef his 95 F350 7.3 up to the point of blowing the tranny and other stuff but he was going big up grades.
Will most likely put in an order for the TS Performance chip this weekend. I'm pulling the wheels to pack the bearings in the morning and will get the numbers from the pcm then. have no door stickers. Truck was hit in the driverside and door replaced before I got it. I too hit it in the driverside with my J20.

You shouldn't need all of that info. They just need to know the year and whether it's an auto or manual tranny. You won't blow the tranny just by these upgrades. You can't run the TS more than 50hp anyways until you get bigger injectors to support the higher HP levels. Good luck and keep us informed!
Looks like I can go with a 5" Diamond Eye kit for not alot more in price. Should I go ahead and do that or just stick with a 4". Is the $58 dollar difference worth it.
I never intend on juicing this truck way up, for now. Maybe later but I don't see me going very extreme with it ever.
Is there something I can do to my stock air intake to make it better. I'd like to run the remaining stock pile of filters I have for it before going to something else.
Thanks for the advice guys I really appreciate it.
4 inch is plenty big, but if you want 5 inch go for it, its up to you. I've got 5 inch on mine. As for the air filters, not much you can do with that stock setup except trash it and sell them filters as a package or something on ebay.
