1987 f250 with a 460 we took it out and changed the main and rod bearings
when taking it out wrote down the firing order yes we have a book but wanted it to be same when we put it back but here is where the fun begins
the #1 was at the 8 o clock position
and the order in clockwise was 18654372 / or counter clockwise 12734568 and it ran?
we are going to put it back to original according to the book but is there a way to change it to run or maybe the distributor is from a different size era or they just messed up?
but it ran
When doing the timing on the engine Cyl one should be at TDC and the Dist Rotor should be pointed at tower #1. If you don't have this then you need to pull the Dist and make it right. When you pulled the motor did you pull the dist? Did you make sure it was in time before you pulled the motor? Just asking, I pulled a 302 a few years back and had it all set on timing before I pulled it. I put it pack in and doing repairs and it wouldn't start, come to find out my brother turned the crank on the motor after I pulled the dist. and he didn't tell me.
Everything I have shows the firing order should be 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.
If you ended up with Cyl 1 at the 8 o'clock position on the dizzy then you either seriously messed something up or the outer ring on the harmonic balancer has spun.
did all according to the book and was looking he had the 4 and 8 backwards so only running on 6 but as it is it runs we just followed the book wiring timing and all lol so we will see need to get valve cover Gaskets as the new oil pump showed me where there is a leak lol
