I have a 1989 F-150 with a problem. The only numbers i can find on the side of the transmission are E9TA-AA. The auto parts store told me that no such transmission exists. I need to find a replacement transmission to fit my truck. It has a 5.0 V8 engine and the transmission needs to be a 5 speed manual overdrive. Has this transmission been discontinued or can I get a replacement? Please any help would be appreciated.
Thanks @ F150XLT!! I was almost getting to the point of chasing down someone driveing the same truck as mine and asking them! Lol. This info is extremely helpful.
What is the problem with your trans.?
The most common failure are the 3 rubber plugs in the back edge of the shifter cover shrink and let fluid out of the trans. This causes the bearings to fail.
Another failure is the plastic pivot ball the shifter rides in cracks which causes sloppy shifting and causes the two shifter pivot pins to wear.
You should have no problem purchasing parts for this transmission. Search for M5r2.
There are parts and complete transmissions on E-bay and Craigslist. Your local junkyard should have complete units.
I think the whole damned thing whent out. I was going 65 down the freeway and all of a sudden I heard a loud thump and my rpm's redlined. I got it over to the side of the road, put in first, let the clutch out and I started rolling backwards. I went through all the gears, same thing. Exept 4th. I still had 4th. Lol
If you do purchase a used one remove the drain plug and verify it has Automatic Transmission fluid in it (Red color). I purchased a used one and found the prior owner filled it with 90w gear lube to quiet down the noisy bearings.
You should be able to find a used one in good shape locally for $150-$250
