It's best to find a parts truck with the 5 speed

That may be true but it'll still be cheaper then sourcing all the parts separate.
A good ZF5 goes for 700 to 1100 here.

If you hunt good for one you should be able to find a parts truck for around 2k.
You'll spend that on another E40D if you replace it.

No it won't. Mike is steering you in the right direction because you need a lot of little knick-knacky stuff to make the swap go smoothly.

For starters you need:
--A ZF5 from a diesel truck (4x4 or 4x2 to match whatever your truck is as the transmissions are different)
--Both front and rear drive shafts from a truck with the same body configuration (cab and bed length) or you will have to have both drive shafts modified to the right length.
--A manual transmission cross member
--The clutch / brake pedal box
--The clutch interlock switch
--The manual transmission harness
--Clutch Master/slave cylinders
--A manual truck PCM and a manual truck floor pan section with the hole for the shifter(make it a better finished product in my opinion)
--The floor shifter and boots

Additionally, you will likely need a new flywheel and clutch kit unless you happen to find one with a solid-mass flywheel already in it. The Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) that was installed in these from the factory is considered to be a ticking time bomb. They all fail eventually and the ones that go really bad tend to fly apart and break up the transmission housing.

I'm probably forgetting something, but that's the majority of the list anyway. If you have all that, it's not all that big a job and can be done in a weekend with the help of a buddy or two. If you start piecing together the parts yourself instead of trying to find a donor truck you're going to spend a little more money and a LOT more time trying to line up everything you need.

Sounds like its time for a rebuild

The OD light flashing means a code was set. If you can get it to a good trans shop they can pull the codes

If you want to build it yourself here's a good thing to read through. when I do mine it runs about 200 to 300 for parts and a nice triple disk converter for 250 at a local parts house
E4OD rebuild
that guy did a great job on pics
all my tools I made until last weekend I bought the rotunda e4od kit and a fixture to hold it. just because I found them cheap.
if you have done any transmissions its not that bad but if not and you know someone who has just get them to help you. I have pics I sent to someone of the tools I'll see if I can find them.
I'm an auto man but I cant afford to spend 4000 on one so I learnt to build them lol

He may know his stuff, but if that's what he told you to do he sure doesn't know ANYTHING about transmissions.

That will go a long way towards making sure it is DEAD, not just hurt.

If you had talked to someone that really did know their stuff they would have told you that unless you get the codes read you won't be able to fix this. The places that read codes free can't read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
