Is this air filter too small for a stock 292? (1964 2wd 3 spd) I am having problems getting the engine to run lean enough not to soot the side of the truck. Ignition is new, valves adjusted, changed the jets to make sure they were correct, and checked the float level. Idle is adjusted and there is no gas smell at idle, besides the soot pattern indicates it happens while under way. She has a miss sometimes at idle but mostly runs smooth after warm up.
Using the choke, even 1/2 choke, will cause heavy soot to spew on the drive. It occurred to me the small air filter could be causing a higher than normal vacuum which is acting like a choke at higher RPMs. Any thoughts?
How about the needle and seat? You checked float level, good. Power valve?
The power valve is the only thing I have not checked. Float level is good. I have been assuming the power valve is good based on the ability to stall the motor by turning the idle needle in. This should also indicate the needle and seat is good.
I have not seen a power valve for the pre 64 2100 listed for sale, only the 64 and later. I was going to replace the power valve with the jets but the one I found was listed as 64 and later.
Yours looks like the same diameter but twice as tall. I will look for taller one and longer stud. It is probably not the issue but the filter is 2 year old so I will not feel bad abut getting a new one.
Next I will lower the float a little. If is correct according to the manual but it is still running rich.
I bought a guage but do not have a port to attach it to. I need to remove the base and drill and tap a port. The soot pattern indicates it is the cruise mixture that is rich. That being said, I cruise mostly at 40 mph with very light throttle. I after changing the jets I took a 40 mile highway cruise and accumulated no soot.
I installed the CA187 and it is the same diameter but twice as tall. I added a stud extension for the bolt. The old was dirty than I thought.
Based on the street dyno of how long she will spin the tire when leaving the house, it is an improvement. 50 ft vs 20. I revved her to 3900 rpms yesterday. Previously, 3600 is the most I would get to. Seams to be breathing better. I have not seen the soot accumulating as bad but have not been driving much. No AC and 100 degrees limits my time in the truck till the evenings.
