A local street rod club has a big meet / show at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds this weekend. Cars drive up and down Snelling avenue past the fairgrounds all evening on Friday and Saturday. We only live a few miles away, so last night my wife and I parked the Bronco on the service road, set up lawn chairs in the grass and joined the crowd watching the informal parade. It's mostly street rods from the 30s - 50s from the show, but everyone with a cool car / truck will end up cruising, so there are a lot more. Mustangs are the most common Fords, but there are a lot of trucks from a wide range of years as well (my personal favorite was a restored Model A, since my first car was an A). There were a lot of '30s coupes and a few sedans as well. When we were ready to leave we cruised up and down once in the Bronco and got a bunch of cheers, so that was fun too. Just thought I'd share.
The best events are the informal parts. Sounds like a bunch of fun. My buddy & I use to go up to Hot August Nights on cruise night in Sparks NV. Set up some lawn chairs & watch them cruise.
I'm a little biased, but the best cruise out there is the Woodward Dream Cruise here in the city that started it all - the Motor City. Years ago, when my dad was a teenager, the kids would cruise up and down Gratiot and Woodward showing off their cars. Now, it's a full weekend event (officially, but people start cruising a week before) with literally thousands of cars. You will see everything there. Here is the website:
A lot of the locals hate it because it is gridlock for the entire week around Woodward Avenue. I love going to look at the cars, and talk to the people that make them. It really is awesome.
The pony cars are cruisin' on Woodward Avenue
Go and try to pass 'em, they'll smoke you if you do
I lived in Waterford MI (just outside of Pontiac) for a couple of years (while I worked for GM ironically, I drove an F-250 the whole time I worked there). Overall I'm glad to be back in MN, but you sure can't beat the Motor City's attitude toward burning fossil fuels!
