Original wheels?

I have a 1950 ford F1. It has 15in rims right now. But I also have what I believe to be the original rims and hubs for it. These are 17in. My question is are these original size? Will they fit? And will I need to adjust my speedo after install?

The F1 would have come with either 15 or 16" wheels, but not 17" which would have been on an F3. The 17's of course would be 'widowmakers' so you really would not want them. I guess the first question might be, are you sure that your truck is actually an F1? Being your first post, I figured it's a good chance the truck may be new to you, over the past year I have seen a few dealers on ebay selling 'F-1's' that were actually F-3's.

I'm puzzled by the variables described here. The only half ton factory wheel available in 1950 was the 16" x 4.5" Kelsey-Hayes product. A set of later 15" wheels could have been mounted by a prior owner. That's a pretty common modification. The 17" wheels are another matter. I'm not aware of any 17" half ton wheel having the Ford 5 lug x 5.5" bolt circle. So, like Joe said, the 17s are likely F-3 wheels having the 8 lug x 6.5" circle. But if the truck is really a 1950 F-3 instead of an F-1, I also am unfamiliar with a 15" wheel that would clear the rear drums. So we have more questions than answers for you, but things don't add up. BTW, welcome to the group. Stu

I have to agree with truckdog62563 (Stu), my orignal F1 came with 16" x 4.5 wheels.

It's defiantly an f1 I have all the original matching numbers and plates from the ford plant. Traced it back to the KC plant. It's been in the family since 71' but just recently handed down to me by my grandfather with 39k original miles on it. I just find it weird that the color of the truck is on the hubs and the original ford hubcaps are on them as well. It does seem like they would be too large though. He may have purchased them years ago painted them and realized they didn't fit.

Ok, so your serial# starts with either 97HC or 98RC and it has a 6' bed.

Agree Ilya, a 1950 M-H could have come with 15" wheels. That would have been a feature of the conversion. Stu

Stu,
The parts books only list the 16" wheels, but the shop manual list a 16 x 4 1/2K #8C 1015 drop center and also a 15 x 5.50F #7RC 1015 semi-drop center.
Both have the same 5x5.5 bolt pattern and .62 offset.

Yes sir, your are so right. Right there on the Specifications page. But, for the life of me I find no other citation anywhere for 7RC 1015. I've been through every reference I've got with no match. The M-H 15" x 5.5" is 01AS 1015B/K-H 23427 and is listed as a change over wheel. Not a factory item. M-H also used a 15" x 6" under K-H 33751. I found no Ford number for it. Maybe Chuck or Bill will see this and find there was a number change or cross reference listed somewhere, but it's defeated me. Stu

I appreciate all the info from you guys. It's been a big help. I feel they were purchased after the truck and painted with plans to put them on and never did. On to the next project of getting my Yankee turn signal to work again. This is gonna be a great forum to be apart of.

The 15s are on the truck, right? Can you tell us if the center discs have what are called "innie" hub cap mounts or "outies"? There will be nubs that the hub cap is pressed over to hold it in place. An original era wheel would have four innie nubs as pictured. Please look only at the four nubs on this wheel. This wheel is a hyper rare 18" but serves to show the nubs.

This second picture shows what is called an outie. Stu

If you are not going to use those 17'' widow makers and they are in good condition I sure would be interested in buying 3 of them.

The 15's are outties and the 17's are innies.
