I have a 1961 F100 Flareside with a mess under the dash. Previous owners have done a great deal of modifications to the original wiring. In some places there are scotch splicers and other places there is electrical tape connections. Also, there are some bare wires and some dangling wires. In searching this site, I think there are no aftermarket dash wiring harnesses. I was wondering what would be the recommended way to fix the mess. Some of the switches don't do anything and some work with the key off.
Should I just start with a new fuse block and run new wires to the individual switches? Should I try to find an original dash wiring harness and replace everything that way? I do have a good understanding of wiring and electrical systems and am not intimidated by rewiring. I would like to fix it the easiest way possible. It's not a show truck and I'm not concerned with keeping it completely original.
I've learned a lot from this forum and look forward to getting the experts' opinions.
There's also a service, maybe called "Classic Harnesses"?? You send them your original harness and they'll make a new one to match, not including the modifications. I can't remember if a FTE member mentioned this service.
The answer depends on what you want from the truck.
If you want it to be original as possible, then the only solution is an original harness or an excellent copy.
If you want to use the truck as a reliable daily driver and / or you might like to add things in the future, then upgrade to newer tech and replace everything that is practical to replace. Old wiring can be good for a while but there is always something that stops working or starts blowing fuses, etc.
