Trans time

Coming home from work this evening, running along about 70mph on the highway went to pass a car, gave enough throttle to get pass ran it up to about 75mph. All of the sudden nothing, engine rev no motion. Coasted to the shoulder tried reverse, 1 , 2, D nothing. 243k miles on it & fluid is about 50k miles on it still bright red & no burnt smell. O/D light never blinked or came on. Temp was reading just past the 165* mark at the time.

I guess 243k is all I'm gonna get out of her

Are you sure its a tranny problem. TPS also gives similar symptoms. Mine went out in a parking lot. I could start the truck but it would not go into any gear, it would just sit there at idle and not do anything. Changed out the TPS and gtg. You might also try some electric cleaner spray and get up under that pedal and give it a good cleaning and see if that will free up the TPS.

I don't believe there is any prob with the TPS, I can rev engine to whatever RPM I want.

Should be good there, Front pump in the trans could have gone, no pressure no gears, thats your first step, if you have access to a pressure gauge, if not scantool, see if there are any trans codes. you got your money's worth out of that one. Ford offers reman transmissions in the crate for under 900 bucks with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. add a banks trans command and your goods to go for another 250,000. David 7.3

You may be lucky.... I hope you are. I don't know enough about what I'm going to say so someone step in and correct me!!

Theres 2 bolts that have a tendency to back out causing you to loose all line pressure. I believe you have to drop the pan and valve body to get to them. Much more smarter guys then me will be by soon....

I wish someone would have mentioned this to me when I thought my trans went out!!! $$$$ later.... Stupid bolts!!!!!

Kinda doubt it's the feed bolts. When my loosened up a few years ago. I still had lots of slippage in the Forward gear selections, but Reverse worked fine.

Iirc I had an issue with reverse too. It's worth a shot at at least looking before dropping the cash on it.... Unless this is an excuse to upgrade

The Forward clutch loses pressure when the bolt is loose. The Forward clutch is engaged in all "forward" positions only. Reverse does not use the Forward clutch. Reverse uses Direct, Coast, L/R, and OD Roller .

Thanks for the replies fellas

The O/D lite never flashed & worked on/off when I pushed the button so I don't believe it is something as simple as that.

No forward/reverse at all, even when revving the engine so I don't believe anything is slipping, I believe something is sure enough broke.

Just spoke to a fella that really knows these trucks & was told about what could be broke inside & may be able to be "fixed" & then hope it will last a while for X amount of $$. He suggested the Ford HD with the warranty for a good price, he has installed a couple of them & says they are good & me not making big HP is probably the way I'm gonna go. Wish I could afford the BTS or John Woods but I really can't justify that $$$ when I'm not sure how much longer I'll keep the truck anyway.

cj45lc...

Are you the original owner (or do you know that the trans in the truck is original).

Does it have the original torque converter?

What is the build date of your 2000?

No I am not the original owner I bought the truck in 2004 with 53k miles on it.
I'm gonna say the trans & all it's parts were the originals, my son was working as a service writer at a different Ford dealer than I bought the truck from & ran it through their computer system & if I remember correctly nothing showed up related to the truck until I took it in for a cam position sensor after I had it for some time.
The build date is June 2000

CJ,

Sorry to hear you are having transmission problems. Keep in mind with a chip the warranty is voided with most places. I think BTS is the only one I know of that doesn't care.

Hey Grant
Yes I know the deal about the chip but the installer would have to be the one to bring up the chip...I've got a good installer LOL. If I was to have trouble on the road somewhere well I'll cross that bridge when & if I get there.

Funny but I was looking at my notes & I put the Banks stuff with the Transcommand on there at 68k miles. Then removed that & put Bill's tunes on at 90k miles so I guess I can't complain at 243k.

Hope you are doing well bud
