Lol yes they're ok. Brought my own life boat. What happened was, had the Ex, my wife, three guinea pigs, her truck on a trailer, and 500 lbs of stuff driving back from Phoenix. Truck had been running great up until then. Only 200 miles from home it starts pouring smoke coming to the top of a hill on the interstate. Spend the next couple hours unloading the truck and transferring all the important stuff (like three unhappy guinea pigs). Ex goes home on a tow truck, trailer goes back to the closest uhaul and we get home about midnight feeling pretty lousy.

Given that the service guy used the H word so much and it was under heavy load when it went I'm starting to loose my optimism.

As it stands now the warrantee place wants them to tear it down to the point of failure to the tune of about 4.5 hrs worth of labor to decide if they'll cover it. That sound about right for a shop to pull one or more fuel injectors?

Once they are down to the injectors pulling more than one should not really
take that much more time. I would guess less than 5 minutes to pull each
additional injector.

It's the cleaning and reinstallation that will take more time and most of that
is in the cleaning.

Didn't think to ask the guy when I talked to him, is there typically any need to drain the coolant on an injector swap? Could someone maybe point me to a write up on the procedure so I have a better idea of what's going on?

No need to drain coolant. Turbo and intake can stay in place.

Update: Getting worse quickly. They got the injector pulled and apparently something important suffered a critical existence failure and the end of the injector came out in pieces. Dealer says it'll run a further $2500 to pull the engine, pull the head, and replace the injector sleeve & whatever else they know is wrong at this point. So of course the warrantee place is back pedaling like one of the afore mentioned guinea pigs and won't cover it because my warrantee only covers "internally lubricated parts" or some such nonsense (insert rude gesture here). $2500 is still in the realm of reality but again that's no guarantee there won't be other issues down the line.

They have to pull the motor?

I have a feeling a long block would be cheaper by the time this is all said and done

That's what he said. I know some places pull the cab on the trucks to get to the heads an Ex must be too much headache. You may be right about a long block too, but no one knows what the damage is beyond this yet.

So all that is known is that an injector broke and flooded the cylinder causing hydrolock while running? And the wif light never came on and no other warning sign?

They need to shove a borescope into the hole
And have a look at the walls and piston top

Correct, and an ominous ticking noise before I got the engine shut down. All gauges were normal (fuel psi, ect, eot, boost, EGT, trans temp), no lights, 3k on fuel filter. Injector tip was in pieces.

Did just have a thought. Voltage was low-normal. I'd actually just had the alternator replaced down in PHX cuz voltage had been getting down in the high 12's in the desert. Could some sort of FICM low voltage issue from the low alt. volts have contributed?
