...........I thought I might turn to other things that are on my list to help me for building my ranch.
Winches have LONG been on the dream sheet, first for the Forester and now for the F250, but they've been something I have yet to get around to. It's more likely on the -250 though, because it's not just a piece of emergency equipment but something that could be used to help in barn raising or after the trailer discussion, some to haul equipment on and off of trailers.
So down to basics at first. Where to put it? Almost always, I see them mounted on the front. I imagine for pulling stuff on a trailer, one just turns around the truck.....but I'm a babe in the woods here, so tell me.
I use 2 different winches, and yes you are correct you can turn around and use the front winch. I have a 15K Milemarker hydraulic winch on the front and use it 95% of the time, I personally would not have an electric winch as a primary winch, and I have a 8.5K electric on a mount that fits into a 2.5" hitch receiver for lighter duty use. For the electric I have a portable battery pack, with 2- 6volt golf cart batteries in series that I place very close to the winch with long 00 gauge cable that I hook to the truck batteries when needed. This portable setup allows me to use the winch with my garden tractor with out straining the electrical system on the tractor.
Like anything else, it seems like the winch requires a lot of research.....and decent bit of money.
But that's not to surprising when one is thinking about doing it themselves without a whole bunch of help. Without manpower, it becomes equipment intensive.
Let me toss one notion out there. Instead of putting the lighter duty winch on the truck, how about putting it on the Forester, my other car? When I am eventually able to live on the ranch, down the road quite a bit, both vehicles will be there....and I'm not getting rid of either.
2 things for now.
The winch should be mounted so it pulls directly in line with the frame rails.
Line pull is usually rated on the first wrap of the drum.
Not trying to brake any rules - if my comment does - will an administrator just delete it and advise me.....
You will find any and everything you might want to know about winches on the Jeep Forum - Jeep Enthusiast Network almost half the Jeeps used off road have a winch. I realize that you need a larger capacity winch for our trucks than a Jeep requires, but there is a ton of information over there.
I have a 9k winch mounted in the front of my bed on my F250 and it is set up with quick disconnects that also allow the winch to be removed and hung on the tow hooks in the front.
It was custom built (I did not build it - previous owner did) and has really come in handy.
I will try and get some pics up here..
An alternative is to mount to a bracket that plugs into a 2" receiver. If you have a front hitch receiver, you could move from rear to front easily as long as you have some good stout cables to go to the battery..
