Hey guys I was towing a full water buffalo, 1000 gallons of water plus dual axle trailer probably roughly 10,000lbs. I noticed to have very high egts on the highway which were about 900 at 60 on flat road. Didn't really alarm me much cause usually it runs about 800ish. The problem came in when I noticed a steady haze of grey white smoke towing it up hill with egts at around 1250. The truck was about 3000 rpms and only going about 30. Seemed to really be struggling up the hill. Do I have a problem or are these normal symptoms for towing weight? Also I should mention my truck is an 02 with 167k with intake straight pipe and ts6. I turned the ts6 down to 50hp when towing. Any help would be appreciated!
Check the obvious -Is air filter & oil clean ? Can you run in stock mode & does this help? The weight you are towing should'nt be a big issue for your truck.
Because of the 50hp tune boost was max probably 20psi. However I have been having a problem with boost at low rpm when I get in the throttle. It doesn't want to build
Check all your hoses. Remove and reinstall, use some hairspray on the connections. Also install new IH up pipes. I did all this and have great boost. It shouldn't defuel till around 23 psi stock with no boost fuller. But that's usually the problem. 1250 is pushing it with mostly stock truck. I know you said 50HP but who's tuner?
Sounds like boost leaks or exhaust leaks on up-pipes not allowing boost to build? I suspect something similar with mine, my stock turbo would build around 25-27psi when i first install the tuner, but now all i can get it about 20-22. Is there evidence of soot on back firewall or down low underneath the truck around the down pipe?
Like Bonanza mentioned, Do you have a boost fooler installed? If not, the turbo will not boost over 22 psi since the PCM will defuel the engine. Like others suggested - check for boost leaks and any air flow restrictions (i.e. dirty air filter, partially closed EBPV) since these could lead to higher EGT's & excess smoke.
But the 20 psi boost limit can also be from the turbo wastegate opening as well.
Like Phil (Schlepprock250) the part that caught my attention is the white/grey smoke & problem building boost. Check around the turbo with one of those telescoping mirror tools for oil leaks. I would check to see if your EBPV is sticking and causing the boost build up problem.
also, I would try a different/lower HP tune when towing, and keep in mind that at 30 mph your torque converter is not locked yet so try starting out in 2nd gear & get her up to 35 mph so the TC locks.
