Fuel System Problem

Greetings Fordlings, I have a 85 F150 with a 302 and aod transmission. the truck has an edelbrock 600 cfm manual choke carb on a victor jr torquer 2 intake. the problem im having is i am getting a massive amount of pressure between the fuel pump and carb. i have a clear fuel filter on it and looking at the filter while the truck is running it just barely fills the bottom of the filter up but builds so much pressure that you cant even squeeze the filter. i unhooked the fuel line on the pump side of the filter and stuck it in a jar with the truck running and it flowed a nice smooth powerfull stream of fuel. the truck will only run decent with the distrib turned all the way possible clock wise. otherwise it misses and backfires alittle. i rebuilt the carb recently but was sure to set the floats to the recommended specs. any ideas?

You should only be getting around 7psi fuel pressure. Is there any chance you converted from fuel injection to carburated along the way and are still running the original (high pressure) fuel pump?

You should get a fuel pressure gage installed (testing). You could have a stuck pressure relief valve in the fule pump if you have an aftermarket Holley type pump. Also, you may be able to add a fuel pressure regulator to control pressures.

Too much fuel pressure will overpower the needle/seat in the carb and flood your engine.

Regarding the timing, thge only way to really know what is going on is put a timing light on it. You can buy one for around $15. "All the way over" may be in/near the correct place. if the distrubtor was removed and reinstall one tooth off, it could still be timed correctly, but the distributor housing would not sit in the same spot - so a timing light is needed to see what's going on.

its a factory carbed truck. i put a pressure gauge on it and its showing 6.5 psi before the filter. im thinkin i had to run my other edelbrocks at about 4.5 so ill be getting a regulator. when i have my distrib twisted all the way clockwise i have a real high idle i cant get to come down at the carb and i dont have very much power. when i have it turned back at a decent idle (900-950rpm) it has absolutely no powe.r would me getting rid of all the emissions stuff on the truck affect the distrib? do i need to pull the electronic distrib out and drop a vac advance in its place?
