I am in the middle of building up a 400ci V8 out of a 77 Ranchero, that I plan to put in a 78 F-100 Custom shortbox 2wd pickup. I want to install a performance cam that will give me power in the 2000-5200rpm range, and a little more aggressive idle than stock.
I am going to run a Weiand Action Plus intake manifold, with a 750cfm holley double pumper up top, and transfer power through a built C6 auto with a shift kit, and a TCI Saturday night 2000 stall torque converter.
Try using a cam with higher life and a split 204 intake and 214 duration, in fact, try a 194 and 204 duration cam, there'd be more torque in the usable street/off road range than with the 204/214.
I am using a Crane H272-2 with Crane Energizer Roller Rockers/guide plates/hardened pushrods, a Cloyes double roller timing chain, Fluiddamper, C6/shiftkit/TCI Torque Converter in 400 motor with Ohio Flattops, 351C-4V heads(10.3:CR), Edelbrock Performer Intake, Carter 750CFM carb, Sanderson headers, Flowmasters in a '53 F100. Since my truck is a '53, I have no emissions requirements. I don't think that you could run this motor in an Emissions tested vehicle. I have enough trouble passing the noise specs(95 db). The idle has a great sound, and thanks to the high stall torque converter it is very drivable.
