Cold start issues!

Can not figure out what the heck is going on with my truck. If truck sits more than a couple of hours I have a hard time starting it and when it finally starts white smoke comes out. After truck is hot it does not have an issue cranking up. We replaced FICM and EGR valve. Noticed fuel injector#2 was spiking downward more than the other injectors while running the engine. Any ideas?
I did have all the fluids and filters changed last week and did not have this problem til after that.

Sounds like coolant in a cylinder.... Hydro-lock in the making. 97 F150 4.2l was not notorious for hydro-locking and ruining engines.

Welcome to FTE, DiamondDave71. It sounds like you have a diesel engine. Can you give us more details, like maybe the year ?

Low or bad battery (replace both if one is junk), and upgrade your alternator, the more amps you can afford the better off you'll be. Also which ficm did you go with. Aftermarket or OEM junk?

FICM was OEM and it did not fix the problem at all. Im curious why the truck would start having problems after what should have been a simple fluids and filters change. Once again this morning.....5 or 6 key turns before it started with white smoke. And when it does start, it barely starts then starts to warm up.

From my experience, the 6 or so key cycles to prime fuel filter, coupled with weak batteries can toast a ficm or mimic a bad ficm. A 6.0 uses a huge amount of power during the start and warm up cycle, a weak set of batteries and the sorry factory alternator can not keep up with the demand. I would suggest reading the tech folder in the 6.0 diesel section.

Try putting truck on a good trickle charger over night and see if problem goes away. If so start with a battery load test. A local auto part store can do it for free. If that passes, check the ficm. Do not buy OEM! There are a couple very good aftermarket guys that put out a much better product. Lastly, upgrade alternator to at least a 195 amp higher is recommended.
