line out converter vs. high level inputs
i'm going to be installing a new amplifier/subwoofer this week, which will be my first addition to my factory system in a ranger. i'll be keeping the stock head unit for the time being, so i know that i have two options for connecting my amp - a LOC or using the amp's high level inputs with speaker wire.
are there any advantages or disadvantages for one method vs. the other?
any help would be much appreciated.
Advantages: Once set up correctly, provides a stronger signal to the amp.
Disadvantages: Hard to set up correctly. You have to the gains accurately. Then set the gains on your amp. Cross your fingers they match up nicely. Cheap LOC's induce noise into your system. Nice LOC's are $40-$50.
Line Level
Advantages: Much easier setup. Much cheaper.
Disadvantages: Weaker signal sent to amp=will not get as loud. The signal isn't quite as clear, either. Not too big a deal with subs, though. Still slightly noticeable, though.
My two cents...if you plan on getting a new head unit, just go line level and save yourself the time and money associated with LOC's. If you decide to stay with the stock HU, go to CLICK ME! to purchase a LOC. This guy is a industry recognized genius and makes, by far, the best LOC's money can buy. The company can even give you the proper gain settings for their LOC and your particular head unit, eliminating the headache inducing trouble of trying to get it right. They range in cost from around $9 up to $50. The best being the N-7785V, which is $50.
Hope this helps a little
