Went out this morning and truck refused to start. Ran a diagnostic, no codes. Fuel pump kicks on, starter sounds good. First time I started, it kicked over and then quit. After that, it wouldn't turn over. Any ideas? starter going to hell?
its a 1990 f150 with a 5.0L and the 5 speed. It is the short box regular cab, so single tank. has about 137K on it. Second owner, first guy beat the holy crap out of it.
ya. i called up an old ford mechanic and he told me to get a control module for the electronic ignition. - I picked one up at Napa - hope that fixes it.
Ya everything works, just when I crank the starter - it won't fire. Pulled a plug - no spark.
One day I drove my car over to the LP gas store to fill my BBQ tank. It had been starting fine up til then (the car, not the BBQ). Got ready to go and all I got was CLICK. Horn honked okay - not a perfect test, but kinda lets you know what kind of shape your battery is in. Checked all the cables, bypassed the starter selenoid, still no joy. Had the car towed back to my place (thank goodness for auto club), took off starter and took it to repair shop. They said the brushes and the brush holder were GONE! MISSING!!! I was standing right there when they took it apart so I know they weren't trying to pull a fast one.
I suggest you follow the same procedure. By process of elimination you should be able to track it down. Just in case - be sure it's not a neutral safety switch problem - like an automatic that's not in neutral or park.
On edit--------------------------------
Read the first post and it said it wouldn't turn over so I wrote the message above. While I was typing it looks like we got a few more posts and apparently it does turn over so forget everything I said.
I tried to delete the post but the forum won't let me. Still think it's amazing that I started the car with no problem, drove about 3 miles and when I tried to start it again the brushes and brush holder was just gone.
