2006 6.0L issues

so what are they? I have a 2003 right now and not a single issue bone stock parts mild tune and have not had a hiccup...just wondering how the 06 compares or if it pays to wait a bit and get a 6.4? Thanks

HPOP will go out eventually because of a poopy design, check ball valve flies out and you get no pressure. You have a better EGR than later model 6.0s though.

I'm going to stick by my own saying, as a truck is as broken down as the owner lets it. Diesels are expensive to begin with, it has normal maintenance like any truck, along with part wear and tear.

Only thing prone to fail on ALL vehicles are emissions systems, junk.

There are MANY posts about 6.4s having issues also, the 6.0 has just been around longer to see these problems. They're starting to have Oil cooler issues... Turbos blowing out because it takes 20 seconds for the oil to hit them.. etc etc.

I'm sure we'll even start hearing 6.7 horror stories in a couple years

If I didn't have a 6.0, I'd go for a 6.7. No way would I get a 6.4. They get crappy mileage, and they are ugly.

Just make sure you keep up on routine maintenance with OEM filters. Do not neglect the cooling system, and don't ever try to just get by with bad batteries.

What he said^^^^

If it ain't broke, don't fix it....

The main advantage of a 2006-2007 truck is that you get, more interior comforts, like on wheel AC and radio controls and dual power heated seats.

The really nice features come with the "Tow Command" package: upfitter switches, built in trailer brake controller, upgraded master cylinder, and brakes. I really wish they would've put that on the Excursion for 2005

Cosmetics: Very nice looking paint options for the 2006-2007 MY and the face lift still looks appealing.

My take on it, if you want to upgrade to a newer truck, go for it. Your '03 has been good to you and from the sound of things will continue to be. A 2006-2007 truck is still a REALLY nice upgrade though. Think things through before you move though....

One more thing (and this is just me)...When I bought my 2005 Excursion, I did it for several reasons:

1. I've always wanted one

2. The issues with the 6.0 are well known and documented. Updated parts, procedures, and solutions are readily available and easy to put in. Which brings me to my next point...

3. I can still work on the engine IF something were to go wrong. Be it injectors, alternator, or whatever, chances are I can get to it with the tools I have and get myself back on the road. Sure, you can still work on a 6.4 or 6.7, but there's a lot more involved and it's not for the faint of heart or light of wallet. They're awesome, amazing, powerful trucks, but when things break and the warranty is up $$$$$

I can remember that same sentiment about the 6.0 in 2005.

True, but compared to the 6.4 and 6.7 now, it's not so bad.

I'd add to your list the increased axle capacity (6K front 7K rear for SRWs), the F550 control arms/coil front suspension, larger wheels to match the larger brakes, improved HPOP and coolant pump design, depending on how late '06 also had the turbo upgrade, I'm sure there's more. Negative's: An STC fitting on the HPO that is a "when" not "if" problem, EGR Cooler as mentioned (delete or go with one of the re-cored ones), dummy plug/stand pipes (usually with miles), to name a few...
