1985 Bronco engine won't catch
I restart the engine, it catches, RPMs shoot up to 19 again, and then when I release the key, RPMs drop to 10. I hesitate to drive it b/c of this.
Yesterday, I started her up - same trouble. Catches and then dies. Catches and then levels off at about 10 RPMs. HOWEVER -- when I tried to put the truck in drive (it's automatic), I find myself really having to force the shifter into drive, and then the minute it's in drive, the engine dies.
Is this the transmission? A friend says it could just be the starter, but I think the difficulty in shifting into drive and then back into park means it's the transmission.
questions:
will a new transmission get me better MPGs?
will a new transmission do anything to ensure better emissions? I live in Washington, D.C. and can barely get this truck to pass the emissions standards. I also notice a really heavy emissions smell when the windows are down -- does the transmission have any role in this and will a new one fix this problem?
Sounds like the tranny might be going out or locking up. if your torque converter is ceasing up it might cause the truck to stall in park and therefor shutoff. also could have something to do with hard shifting and dying in drive. try reverse see if it has the same effect just for curiosities sake. I don't really know what it could be but it DOES sound like a tranny problem. Does your truck have a vacuum line going to the tranny?
