bench seat question

this may sound dumb but... how far back should the bench be able to go? the 78 reg cab I just picked up has a non stock bench in it with what I assume to be the stock seat brackets. with the seat as far back as it will go there is about 2" of room between the seat back top and the rear of the cab. should the seat back top touch the cab? here's some bad pics.

It should be within a couple inches of the back window.

i have 2 stock seats out of 70's they both go as far back as yours.
what we forget when we fill up is behind seat tank was an option so every single cab i have seen including junk yards has the space for the tank

Mine goes all the way back. I can't fit my hand behind the seat unless I tilt it forward.
