The way I see it, without that hitch there is a good chance she'd have made it far enough in to push the bumper into the rear quarter panels and damaged them. THAT would have put significant damage to both vehicles, maybe even so much that an insurance company wouldn't want to pay to have an out-of-production truck like an Excursion to be fixed - writing it off instead.

In this scenario (and one other I've been in), she was at fault, and her car suffered the entire damage (other than my hitch). Why should we both have significant damage and for me to suffer a loss because SHE rear-ended me? If rather than splitting up the $ worth of damage between both of us, I'm going to choose to put the entire $ of damage on whoever decides to hit my rig.
No, I agree with you. My point was that people might say that since there wasn't "enough damage" done to you it is in some way your fault. Personally, I love the hitch. I only take mine off so I don't hit my knees on it

Always fun seeing a "safe" little car get totally hammered when they rear end a large "unsafe" vehicle.

Crumple zones are great and all that, but when you rear end someone at 25 miles per hour or less, and it results in a destroyed hood, bumper, headlight, grille, turn signal indicator, upper radiator core support, radiator, air conditioning condenser, radiator hoses, and who knows what else, it also likely totals the vehicle and that little "safe" Neon will be towed to a junkyard, and put in the crusher sooner rather than later, and your "unsafe" Excursion lives without a scratch to drive another day.

Yup! And judging from how 'deep' the hitch went, I have the distinct opinion had I been using a 'normal' ball mount in the receiver:

I think she'd have actually connected with the bumper on the driver side/far passenger side. By having a longer hitch, I think it penetrated far enough to decelerate her before she could make contact with the bumper.

I think people like to use the word 'unsafe' because it's unsafe for them to come into contact with them.

Exactly. Just like the people who think it's "unsafe" to carry a firearm. Might be unsafe for the bad guy who tries to rob me, but not for me.

Hey, I'm just one of those guys who is of the opinion that if you don't want to be a victim, don't put yourself in a weak position. If that means you drive a big truck to avoid getting smashed in a minor accident, so be it!

Kudos to you for having the fortitude to drive what you want, when the tree huggers come out to call you names!

Speaking of which, I got called a dirty name by a lady in a Prius yesterday, when she apparently thought my PSD Excursion burned too much "gas". I politely corrected her, saying that it burns diesel. Her response: "diesel, gas, same thing." To which I responded: "Wrong. Different. Besides, I can make my own fuel for MY truck. It's called 'biodiesel.' So thanks for funding terrorists with YOUR gas powered car."

Sorry for the threadjack! LOL

Another funny thing...I've read on a lot of other forums people complaining that 'all you get from leaving your ball mount in the receiver are bruised shins'

...if you get a bruised shin from a ball mount in an Excursion, you are one tall SOB!
...if you get a bruised anything from a ball mount in an Excursion more than once, you need to make sure you don't have early onset Alzheimers.
...if you think the 'pain' of bruised shins is worse than the 'pain' of having your vehicle totaled from a fender bender accident, I want to make the same salary you are making.

Not really but he has the wrong guy. Crunching little cars never entered my mind when I bought the Ex, it was all about space.
