O/T axle help

Hi Guys
I have a little problem I'm working on.
I bring it up on this forum because I know there are lots smart guys here and this is where I hang the most.
I have an axle under my '61 that I'm looking to either replace, or re gear. I'll take your ideas on which.
It looks like a Dana 60 but the model number says it's an 80. However I thought 80s were full floating and this one is not.
I can't quite get all the numbers off the housing but here are the ones I can see.
It has some short *** gears in it, prolly at least 4.56ish.
Would like to get that up to 3.50/3.70ish 'cause I've been driving it on the freeway quite a bit.
I'm also going to swap out my Jeepified toploader in behind the Y block to get 4 full gears.
My question is this, first dos anyone know what this really is?
Second, is it something I should keep or just throw a 8 or 9 inch in the truck and lose this thing? Just a cruiser truck with little hp.
Thanks for your knowledge and ideas in advance.

Not too familiar with that vintage. That said, truck D60's are generally full floating also. Mine is ('78 F250).

As what to do, how healthy is the engine? A warm rebuild with a little compression, cam and 4 bbl should be fine with a 9". If its "really warm/hot" and you want to drag race, suggest a D60 or race built 9" from Moser, Strange or others. Either of the above may be easier than re-working the '61 rear.

Please consider this a "bump".

I'm no expert on Dana axles, but I did find this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_80

Just change the '80' to a '70' for it's page. According to the articles, the 70 has 3.5 inch axle tubes and the 80 has 4 inch tubes. That should at least help you decide if it is one of these two.

My buddy has a 60 F100 and had the same rearend and we swapped it for a 9 inch out of a 63. After it was all said and done different u joint and it needed bearings it would have been cheaper to have the Dana re-geared.
But now he has a 9 inch!

It's just a warmed over 292 Y. So no problem with power.
I'm thinking if I found a cheap 8.8 or 9 inch, either would work.

Yeah Im curious too about the price to re gear with the larger pinion vs just a quick swap.
I'll call and check it out.
