I'm building a custom medium duty truck and need to figure out what transmission option will be best. I have an Allison AT545 already bolted to my motor but Ill have to change the mounts, driveshaft and possibly even the yoke to make it work. I have a Eaton RT6609A that will need a clutch and maybe flywheel but it will bolt right up with everything else. It also already has a pto which I will need. Im leaning towards the Eaton but would appreciate some other input.
I already know neither transmission has an overdrive so it just comes down to which would be cheaper and easier to make work. The truck has a 4.88 ratio. Anyone have an opinion?
Why don't you tell us a little more about your intended use of the truck? I did a complete re-motor, re-driveline about 5 years ago and am out of this world stoked about the trucks performance!!! You might not need/ want to go to the extremes I did, but I might be able to offer you some advice regarding components and vendors.
You might want to check that Allison AT545, the ones I have seen are direct, not OD. Do you want an automatic or a manual is the first question to ask yourself.
3414 - I know that the At545 doesn't have OD but neither does the Eaton. As far as what I want, Id prefer the manual and to me it seems like it makes more sense to just buy a clutch and bolt it up.
Joaquin Suave - The truck currently has a hydraulic 9'x7'x2' dump bed but I was considering at some point pulling it off and putting a 5th wheel and running the needed air lines for air brakes to pull trailers.(truck has air brakes)
