What engine? How long does it take to overheat? Is the coolant level topped up? Does it go down when running? What are the ambient temperatures like? Does the heater work?
300 inline6 4.9l, it overheats a little bit after I turn it off, my coolant level is topped up, yes the heater does work. Has only overheated while driving once and that was before I had anything done to the truck.
When you say 'overheats a little bit,' how far up the gauge does it go?
It's normal for the engine to get a little bit warmer after being turned off due to heat soak, because the coolant is no longer circulating or being cooled by the mechanical fan, so the remaining heat from the engine is soaked up by the coolant in the block, which slowly dissipates over the course of a few hours.
I wouldn't worry if the needle doesn't get over the 2/3 mark, as long as it goes back down to the halfway point shortly after starting the engine again.
