I'd say $2,000 as well. The interior looks really nice, but you could use things like the nice big dent in the bedside as a negotiation point. Definitely nowhere even close to a $5,000 truck to me.
Check underneath it REALLY well. Check the bottom of the doors and around the windshield seal area, too. That salt air around Houston can eat these things up. I bought a '77 at an auction a couple of years ago that came from Houston and there wasn't a single salvageable piece of bodywork on it. I only bought it for it's new engine, though.
Like others have said, cancer will dictate the price quite a bit. Aside from the massive dent in the bedside it looks like a pretty sanitary truck. You might luck out and be able to buff all the oxidation off of the paint.
If you go look at it in person, check the floor pans for rust. Don't look at them from underneath! Floor pans go bad from the inside out. Pull the carpet/floor mat back and check from inside the cab.
On these trucks, especially the ones with a rubber floor mat instead of carpet, owners would hose down the interior with a hose to clean it. The water gets underneath the mat and doesn't dry. On vehicles with carpet, the jute padding gets wet and it doesn't dry out either. The moisture sits there and over time starts to rust until it eventually becomes cancer and then a very holy floor pan.
From underneath they can look perfect, from above full of scale and pin holes.
And yeah, I'd say $2,000. Maybe start at $1500 and go up.
I can't help but think that I only paid $700 for my supercab 250 4x4, so anything above that seems expensive to me. Granted he was asking a $1000 and I offered him 700 and he took it.
I would suggest being patient and continue to look around. I looked for 4 years, and looked at probably a dozen before I found one that would ultimately work for me. Would have preferred to have an inline 6, but I'm happy with mine. Don't settle too quickly just because you want one. The right one will come along.
