GEM Computer Problem
I have a check engine light on. Took my 2000 Explorer to Pep Boys to have them tell me what code indicated on GEM plug. Technician said he could not read because there was no power on computer. I found wiring diagram with four different fused wires going to computer and all were OK. Questions: 1) is this the computer over the rear driver's side wheel in jack compartment? 2) Does anyone have suggestion on trouble shooting? 3) Has anyone ever replaced one of these from junk yard? 4) HELP!

You mention in the title "GEM" and refer to a "GEM plug" but the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) does not have a separate diagnostic port, its diagnostics are accessed through the OBD-II diagnostic port.
So are you referring to the GEM or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which is the primary system accessed through the diagnostic port? The PCM is mounted high on the passenger side dash with the connector accessed from under the hood.
Power for the diagnostic connector is via fuse 17 (25A) located in the Central Junction Box (CJB). The CJB is located under the dash, near the parking brake pedal.
The module you are referring to in the driver's side jack compartment is probably the Remote Anti-theft Personality (RAP) module for the remote keyless entry.

Thank you very much rod. The 25 amp fuse you mentioned at 17 in my explorer is on the very left end of the dash and was the problem. Yes it was the obd ii plug. I took the car back and got two codes: 0401 and 0174. I disconnected the battery and cleaned the MAF sensor. I had previously replaced the EGR tube. No more check engine light. Thanks again.
