Pick up a remanufactured duraspark distributor from AutoZone with the cap and adapter and run it to a MSD box... It's very simple to wire up and you'll get a performance increase. I have used points in a few Fords but the Duraspark is pretty much problem free.

The electronic ignition is better but there is nothing wrong with a mechanical points system. Just make sure you set the gap and the dwell properly and it will run like a top. One thing about points: When you wash your engine down at the self-service car wash, you will always have that nagging uncertainty about whether you got those points wet and the old truck won't fire. This builds character and teaches humility. Good luck.
