tailgate problems

I just got back sun. evening from the beach near padre island and we opened the tailgate to unload and closed it with no problems. It had shown no problems till now. it won't open. Before it had some sort of a safety, the tailgate would not open unless the glass was rolled down all of the way. It acts like the safety latch is stuck.
I was wondering if any of yall could give an idea to look for when I get some time to open it up. No tailgate s@$ks *****.

Thanks

With the glass FULLY down, can you feel the normal "catch" in the handle when you pull it up, or does it seem the same with the glass rolled up a few inches? Does the handle lie flat against the t/g, or is it staying up slightly? It's easy to bend the mechanism, especially if someone tried to open it with the glass NOT fully down.

Click my sig link and look in the Tailgate album.

It felt the same with the glass up a few inches as with the glass down all the way, one of the other guys came over and tried to force it and bent something, now the handle sticks up a little bit but can be poped back down.

Yep - that's why it won't open now. He bent the mechanism. It may be possible to fix it by reaching inside & bending it back down, but there's no way to know if you got it right without pulling it out & looking. The Tailgate album in my signature link shows exactly what your situation is.

But it didnt open before he bent the linkage. Thats what im trying to figure out, what kept it from opening it before it got bent.

OK Did you look at the pics? They show the linkage, and you should be able to tell how it works. Just pull out the center mechanism and examine it.
